Time to Replace Your Mattress? – Part 5: It’s Uncomfortable

The fifth and final entry in our series on identifying when it’s time to finally replace your mattress comes down to one of the most basic, but overlooked effects of a poor mattress: Discomfort.

Tip #5. You’re Uncomfortable

Camping is fun occasionally, but you shouldn't wake up every day feeling like you spent the night in the woods

Discomfort should be the biggest factor when it comes to deciding if you need a mattress replacement. This can happen as it ages, or, it can happen with a brand-new mattress you’ve had for a month. There are no set rules to comfort, with every person having their own needs and preferences with bedding. But simply put, your mattress should not be uncomfortable.

Before going any further, we would like to point out that there is a break-in period after purchasing a new mattress. After years of sleeping on one surface, your body has acclimated to the old mattress and gotten used to the support and comfort it provides, or its lack thereof. A new mattress will provide support and a feel that your body is not used to, and it can take a while before this feels normal. A good example of this is shoes. We all have old sneakers that are worn paper thin, with holes and torn laces. We’ve worn them so long, it’s like they’ve molded to our feet. But while they may be nice to slip on to take out the trash, they aren’t providing support and impact absorption. A new pair of shoes will feel completely different, as they hug and touch your feet in a different way. The new shoes provide the support your body needs though, and soon enough, you get used to them. Before making a knee-jerk reaction to a new mattress, no matter what kind, we suggest that you sleep on it for 2 to 3 weeks, to make sure any issues you may be experiencing are actually your body not liking it, and not your body slowly getting used to the new bed.

General discomfort though, often arises from the structural inadequacies of a mattress. If you toss and turn every night trying to get comfortable, feel like you’re bottoming out, or, worst case scenario, you can actually feel individual springs, your discomfort means you won’t be getting the rest your body needs. If you wake up with a sore neck, back, or limbs, especially if you didn’t go to bed feeling that way, your mattress may be at fault.

Sleep should be rejuvenating. Your body repairs, heals and relaxes itself while you sleep, fixing all the things you did during the day. Your mattress should give your body every opportunity to do this, and with discomfort not allowing you to get the deep sleep you need, your body doesn’t recover the way it should. And of course the stiffness, aches and exhaustion will follow you, making days miserable.

While some of these suggestions may seem fairly basic, it is because figuring out if you need a new mattress is a fairly simple process. The real difficulty in is actually realizing that it may be your mattress creating issues, and not the million other factors in your life. So, if you often feel sluggish during the day, experience stiffness or aches, can’t seem to fall asleep, or are battling allergies, take a moment to evaluate your mattress, and you may discover what you had been missing all along.

We hope this series of suggestions made it easier for you to objectively evaluate your mattress and decide if it’s time to get a new one.
